Wow. Two personal blogs in ONE week! Can you believe it? Well believe it! I got an email this morning about an engagement session and what to wear and what not to wear so I felt the urge to be a big help to others and talk about some of our most frequently asked questions! When we set this blog up I was hoping to have loads of time to blog about colors, trends, dresses and stuff like that but it just hasn’t happened. So, from now on once a day I am going to try and blog. Yes… ONCE A DAY! Whether I put a link of a song I’m obsessed with or I actually blog an event, I’ll try and get on here. I might even try and get Coty on here… he might just talk about the Cowboys new stadium and how the scoreboard is too low but hey, at least he’ll be on here right? Okay so I’ll get to the point and answer some questions about engagement sessions, editing and albums!
1. Do you have any ideas or tips on what to wear and what not to wear on an engagement session?
Almost ALL our couples ask us this question! The first thing I tell them is to wear something they feel fabulous in because it will show that feeling in the picture! Here is a list of good and bad ideas for pictures, but in the end it is up to you what you want to wear for your engagement pictures!*Sorry if there is more info for girls but lets face it guys, you look good in about everything!*
GREAT IDEAS-
Both of you wear complimentary colors! For example if you wear light blue he wears navy blue, so they’re both in the same color family but compliment each other great.
You both wear jeans. I am a little bias about jeans because I love them, I also think of them as an investment because you can have them forever! But dressing the jeans up with cute heals and a flashy top then changing into cute flats and a casual top gives you a great opportunity to get a variety of pictures!
Wear something that fits you! Girls you know those tops that could pass for something you could possibly wear when you’re 6 months pregnant, just step away from it and wear something that actually fits!
If you want to wear that fabulous little black dress of yours then remember to bring a casual outfit to change into so you can run jump and play after getting some hot shots in the dress!
Solids or simple patterns like small polka dots. Check out Rachel & Nick’s engagement pictures, she rocked the cute black and white polka dot dress!
Accessories! I’m a purse girl so I’m not much for a bunch of accesories and most don’t wear a purse in an e-session. So this is where I can live vicariously through you! Wear your cute funky necklace, scarf, hats, sunglasses or even your dog! Check out Meleka & Kinsey’s session, she brought her dog Brody and also made all us girls jealous with her Christian Louboutin shoes!
NOT SO GREAT IDEAS-
Horizontal stripes
Shirts with writing on them. This includes Ohio State Buckeye shirts… Just KIDDING!
Short shirts and skirts! Just in case you feel the need to be twirled around or lay on the grass… wear something appropriate!
Matchy Matchy outfits. You know what I’m talking about! Matching black polos and jeans. Trust me on this, you’ll regret it later!
2. Where do you like to shoot engagement session?
This is such a popular question! I always tell couples that unless they have a special spot that means something to them, then I can throw a couple ideas out. I always try and go off the couple, most couples have a theme or direction they’re going in for their pictures so I ask a series of questions to figure those things out. If you’re going for the romantic and garden look then you’d obviously want to go somewhere like Innis Woods. If you like the more urban and modern look then there is downtown, short north or arena district! We can always find an old warehouse for the more industrial look, that look that no one has. Or if you met at Ohio State there is always the stadium and campus. Amy, Steve and I accidentally came across some new band members that were just walking around the stadium and they let us know about an unlocked gate so we just stumbled onto the field… of course I prefer to do it the legal and right way of doing things so do not ask me to sneak in!! This goes along with the outfits, if you have something you already want to wear, think about where you’d want to wear it. If we’re shooting something more urban, wear something classy and dressy! If we’re shooting artsy and modern wear something trendy. If we’re shooting in a part wear something romantic and sweet.
3. Do you outsource your photos or album design?
No we do not! The company we use for our albums designed one of our studio samples, and I loved it but it just wasn’t me so we design our own. There hasn’t been a moment where I thought to myself, I want someone else to do the work for me. Now give me 4 kids and I might think otherwise but if you hire Henry Photography you are getting Coty and Ashley HENRY to shoot, edit and work with you. We’re not one of those business’ that outsource and put their name on it. I can’t imagine having someone else edit my photos because they don’t see the same things I do. The whole point of hiring a photographer is because you love their work and the moment they start sending it somewhere else it makes it feel like its not their work anymore. I found out a while ago that a photographer that I just adore outsources their work a part of me was a little disappointed. I still love it so it works for them but I just couldn’t reliquish that control over my work to let someone else do it. I’ll take a photo and while I’m shooting I’ll be thinking of what I want to do to make the photo amazing. So if I outsourced they’d be getting a tag on a lot of photos of what I wanted to do it… it’d just get annoying. So to sum it up, no we do not outsource our edits or album design.
4. If we hire Henry Photography to shoot our wedding, who will be shooting?
Okay brides and grooms, this is a great question to ask us or any other photographers you’re interviewing. Recently Coty and I decided that from now on we’d only shoot together instead of seperately booking alone. We know that not every wedding needs two photographers, and we’re still willing to negotiate if you have a small intimate ceremony, but except for those circumstances we only shoot together. We advertise ourselves as a husband and wife team so I do not understand why we wouldn’t then work together, right?! I love working with Coty, and I am pretty sure he likes working with me too so when we shot seperately this year, I actually missed him througout the day. In the end we just enjoy working together a lot better! So when you hire Henry Photography to shoot your wedding, you will get Coty and I (Ashley) both there to celebrate and document your big day!
