I had the pleasure of meeting Jen way back in the summer, I think. Networking is a part of the job so its fun to meet with other vendors in the industry and get to know them. So when I asked her to be a part of our feature week, I was thrilled that she wanted to join! It was also nice getting to know her a little better especially since we have a wedding together this year! Check out our interview:
How long have you been a planner? How did you get started?
I officially started J. Lauren Events in 2008 but for me it started way before that. I have a background in business and always wanted to be a creative entrepreneur. So I starting learning everything I could about the wedding industry. What did I love (the people!), what I wanted to change (cake cutting fees!) and how could I add value. I took classes and got my certification through the Association of Bridal Consultants and then started assisting other planners to get as much experience as I could. From there I officially started the business and here I am.
What sets you apart from other planners?
I pride myself on being honest and approachable. I am a bit of a jokester but when it comes to the wedding day (and the budget) I am all business. I guess you could say my work style is to the point but still fun.I like to get things done so the bride and groom can relax and enjoy being engaged.
Weddings are celebrations. You, your family and your friends should have an absolutely fabulous time. My goal is to have your guests talking for years about your wedding. They should walk away saying, ‘wow that was so them”.
What’s your favorite part of planning?
Getting to know the Brides and Grooms, each couple is so different. It is this diversity that makes my job special. I love to work with a couple who wants to take their unique parts and infuse that into the event.
Do you have packages or one set price?
I offer three levels of service plus what I call concierge services. They are little extras you can add on to create a custom package. All my packages are flat fee. Ultimately though, the packages are a starting point and most of my clients request a custom package. That’s OK too.
What’s your style like and how do you bring your style into a couple’s weddings?
My design aesthetic doesn’t really factor into the weddings I work on. It is really about the couple’s style, usually marrying (pardon the pun) two different styles or ideas into one cohesive event.
I always encourage my couples to pick one or two things to really go all out on. Find a way to show your personality and blow the socks off your guests. You lose the impact when there are too many things competing for attention.
But if you absolutely must know- I love modern urban weddings with a touch of vintage glam and casual summer farmhouse weddings. Opposite ends of the spectrum but that’s me.
Tell us some up and coming trends for 2010!
Backyard and tent weddings are still very big this year. These events require significant coordination but are always unique and special. Plus you are not restricted by a venue’s rules or décor.
Grays and purples are the top colors for my 2010 weddings. And fabulous food is a must, but with a kitsch twist thrown in for fun. We are continuing to see a focus on local and seasonal ingredients as well.
